Located at the University of Essex, our Colchester Campus is a lively, modern place with beautiful parks around it. Located in the historic town of Colchester, just two hours northeast of London, the campus has a welcoming, ‘small village’ feel, with space for students to explore and relax.
Our students stay in the South Courts accommodation and enjoy a variety of shops, cosy cafés, well-equipped classrooms and sports facilities. There are also multiple canteens, each with its own menu and delicious food options.

Colchester, the first major city and capital of Roman Britain, is just 2 miles away. Known for its rich history, the town is full of ancient landmarks and charming streets.
With its warm, ‘small village’ feel, the campus combines peaceful spaces to relax with plenty of opportunities to explore and enjoy student life.
South Courts accommodation puts students right at the heart of campus, close to shops, cosy cafés, and modern classrooms. A choice of canteens means there is always something new to try, each offering its own tasty menu. For those who love to stay active, the campus has outstanding sports facilities, both indoors and outdoors.
The Location
Colchester, the oldest recorded town in England, is rich in history and culture. Students can discover its famous Roman ruins, the impressive Colchester Castle, and hidden streets with stories from the past. The town also offers beautiful parks, lively cafés, and plenty of shops to enjoy.
Around and about
In addition to the big town of Colchester, there are nearby villages and areas that students can explore. Wivenhoe is a small riverside town with a history of fishing and boat building, offering a variety of shops and cafés. Hythe, a former industrial area south of Colchester on the River Colne, has a large convenience store about a 30-minute walk from campus for everyday essentials.
Travel and Transport
Regular public buses run from the campus to Colchester city centre. There are also two nearby train stations, Hythe and Colchester Town, which can take you to London in just over an hour. By car, Colchester is about two hours from London.
All trips on the student excursion programme are made by private coach.
The Accommodation
Colchester South Courts is just a five-minute walk from the main campus. Students live in flats with 4-14 people, each with a comfortable single en-suite bedroom and free Wi-Fi. While there are no kitchens or shared common areas, the rooms are designed for comfort and convenience.
