The Campus

The Campus

Located at the University of Essex, our Colchester Campus is set in 200 acres of beautiful parkland, roughly the size of 120 football fields. Colchester, the first major city and capital of Roman Britain, is just 2 miles away. Known for its rich history, the town is full of ancient landmarks and charming streets.

With its warm, ‘small village’ feel, the campus combines peaceful spaces to relax with plenty of opportunities to explore and enjoy student life.

South Courts accommodation puts students right at the heart of campus, close to shops, cosy cafés, and modern classrooms. A choice of canteens means there is always something new to try, each offering its own tasty menu. For those who love to stay active, the campus has outstanding sports facilities, both indoors and outdoors.

Location

The Location

Colchester, the oldest recorded town in England, is rich in history and culture. Students can discover its famous Roman ruins, the impressive Colchester Castle, and hidden streets with stories from the past. The town also offers beautiful parks, lively cafés, and plenty of shops to enjoy.

Around and about

In addition to the big town of Colchester, there are nearby villages and areas that students can explore. Wivenhoe is a small riverside town with a history of fishing and boat building, offering a variety of shops and cafés. Hythe, a former industrial area south of Colchester on the River Colne, has a large convenience store about a 30-minute walk from campus for everyday essentials.

Travel and Transport

Regular public buses run from the campus to Colchester city centre. There are also two nearby train stations, Hythe and Colchester Town, which can take you to London in just over an hour. By car, Colchester is about two hours from London.

All trips on the student excursion programme are made by private coach.
