Main Duties and Responsibilities
Welfare, Safeguarding and Health and Safety
- To have read and understood the staff handbook and be fully conversant with our policies for the welfare and protection of students. At all times whilst on duty, all staff are responsible for the care, welfare and safety of students.
- To have been inducted to at least level 2 safeguarding.
- Ensure that all St Andrew’s College Language Schools Health & Safety policies are implemented and monitored.
- Be able to name and identify the First Aid people and follow the First Aid policies on the campus.
- Be familiar with and ready to implement the Emergency Action Plan.
- Be familiar with and ready to follow the Fire Safety regulations.
- Know/follow and share the ‘campus rules’ with the students.
- Know who to talk to and have the contact details of the relevant people in the company and on the campus regarding any concerns with the above.
Assist the DoS in keeping a record of all Welfare, Safeguarding and Health and Safety problems, solutions and outcomes per guidelines.
Accreditation
Be familiar with British Council and English UK guidelines (documents available on campus, online and pre-contract) and ensure academic management achieves and maintains the standards set out in these guidelines. Co-operate with any British Council Inspection procedures.
Management of Teaching and Learning
- Assist with the Academic Staff Induction Day, usually one or two days prior to the students’ arrival, following company guidelines.
- Assist with inducting any new Teaching and Learning staff member who may start during your contract.
- To have read and be fully conversant with the DoS and Teachers’ job descriptions and support and carry out the positions accordingly.
- Assist in managing the Academic Programme per St Andrew’s College Language Schools guidelines and procedures.
Ensure that a high standard of teaching is maintained. Work with the Dos and teaching department, guiding teachers to the best source of support in planning, preparing and teaching English language lessons that are relevant and appropriate to the students learning needs, interests and culture, whilst following the St Andrew’s College Language Schools’, summer school educational programme.
- Foster a safe and positive atmosphere for both students and colleagues.
- Show initiative, take responsibility and set a good example for students both in and outside the classroom. Corridor safety, chaperoning your class to venues etc.
- Be prepared for and ready to adapt to new students, making sure that continuous enrolment is taken into consideration and that new students are welcomed and introduced into classes.
- Be willing to try new approaches in lessons and utilise the potential of the resources in the classrooms.
- Be responsible for the students’ books.
- Exploit the students’ books content (where relevant).
- Use any materials/provide information to students that St. Andrew’s College Language School deem ‘essential’.
- Work with your teaching colleagues to share experience and knowledge and enhance the core curriculum.
- Include in lessons, strategies for independent learning both inside and outside the classroom.
- Deliver student-centred lessons with a strong emphasis to practice and improve oral communication.
- Set clear learning aims and ensure students know what they are learning and why they are learning it.
- Ensure students record their learning achievements in their books.
- Follow the company guidelines on board work.
- Follow the company guidelines on the essential information that must be displayed on your classroom wall.
Assist the DoS by being proactive, offering support to teachers before it is requested.
- Guide and support any newly qualified, less-experienced or teachers needing assistance per guidelines to the best source of support.
Assist the DoS with the running of the Student Placement Test as directed
- Liaise with Centre Managers as to location and whether ‘welcome speeches’ will also take place.
- Provide a clear guide to staff as of how to run the placement test.
- Provide a clear guide to students as of how to take the placement test.
- Organise the professional monitoring of placement tests.
- Organise the efficient marking of placement tests.
- Organise the teaching of ‘holding classes’ while placement tests are being marked, using the provided St Andrew's College teaching materials.
Assist the DoS with the running of the Student Placement Test as directed

Assist the DoS by creating Class Lists and Class Registers of no more than 15 students from the results of the Placement Test, taking into consideration level of English, multi-national mix, age and continuity
- Students should know which class they will be placed in ASAP. Same day (for early arrivals), in advance of next day (for late arrivals) day. Per guidelines.
- Liaise with Group leaders to approve Class Lists.
- Maintain accurate, daily class lists and oversee the accurate keeping of classroom registers.
- Monitor the online class attendance within the first ten minutes of class, per guidelines.
- Follow up on anything of concern on the online class register.
- Check that Lesson Logs are being completed after each class.
Log and maintain an accurate summary of ‘problems, solutions and outcomes’ following company guidelines.
Assist the DoS by organising the Teaching Timetables smartly with a sustainable cover programme in place.
- Highlight to Senior Management in a timely fashion, any absenteeism or staff shortage.
- Teach when necessary e.g. teacher absence/sickness/insufficient staff numbers
Assist the DoS by maintaining accurate staff records, in accordance with company guidelines
- Create accurate and up to date staff rotas/timetables
- Update staff personnel files as requested and maintain their confidentiality.
- Log an accurate weekly record of staff hours following company guidelines
- Log and maintain an accurate summary of ‘problems, solutions and outcomes’ following company guidelines.
Assist the DoS with the Organisation, advertising and running of the Students Certificate/Graduation ceremony as directed.
- Print, in advance, the students’ certificates, as directed.
- Distribute the students’ certificates, as directed.
- Return students’ books.
Present accurate and up to date ‘Teaching and Learning signage/information’ for students, clients and staff in the designated areas on Campus: timetables, classrooms, class lists, certificate ceremonies, focus groups etc.
Assist the DoS by organising and minuting staff meetings and optional sessions corresponding to the needs of the teachers.
- Daily meeting for everyday updates.
- Weekly meeting for whole team feedback.
- Individual meetings if required and for appraisal.
- Focus groups with St Andrew’s College Language School senior management teams.
- Weekly ‘Teacher Training’ sessions.
- Others if required
Assist the DoS in organising ‘Group Leader’ sessions.
- Organise an introduction to the Teaching and Learning programme and Teaching and Learning Management team, focusing on the teaching practises, the resources and the course(s), whilst learning and addressing Group Leader and company expectations.
- Organise weekly Focus Groups for feedback, exchange of problems, solutions and ideas.
- Respond to feedback in a timely, positive and constructive manner, whilst following company guidelines
Represent St Andrew’s College Language Schools positively in all conversations with clients, staff, and the host centre.
Assist the DoS in the running of a manageable teacher room/office environment from which to work from.
- Use the available space to clearly communicate essential information with the teaching team and other campus staff.
- Keep the provided resources well organised and inventoried, following company guidelines.
- Provide a safe and hospitable environment for teaching staff to plan and prepare lessons and foster a positive working atmosphere.
- Monitor and be responsible for all academic resources and equipment.
- Be responsible for the distribution, organisation and stock taking of Students’ and Teacher's books, following company guidelines.
At the end of contract/summer school term, assist the DoS packing and returning all stock and equipment per guidelines.
The activity programme is as important as the academic programme, and students have the right to expect an equally high standard of delivery for both aspects.
- Have up to date knowledge of and take an interest in the students’ activity programme/s
- Encourage the involvement of students in activities and events.
- Look at ways in which classroom learning can assist the students with their activity programme and implement them.
